Royal Oak Dairy to become affordable housing

Hamilton is full of buildings that were once bustling and prosperous businesses. While many now sit neglected or abandoned, Royal Oak Dairy is about to receive a major remodel worthy of its 89-year history.

Since closing its doors in 1991, the former dairy bounced back and forth between various owners for over 25 years. In February of 2017, the Royal Oak property went back on the market for $3 million. Earlier this week it was announced that Indwell, a Christian affordable housing charity, has acquired the land and has big plans for the property.

Indwell’s goal is to repurpose the existing building into both low and medium income apartments, as well as creating residential units. They hope to complete the project over the next three years.

Such a short time from purchase to completion is rather ambitious as the project is still in its early stages. The development’s interior has yet to be designed, but Indwell hopes to receive feedback from the community.

As the project is meant to address the city’s housing crisis, Indwell want to make sure the development caters to the neighbourhood’s specific needs.

To kick of the project and get to know the community, Indwell is hosting a free barbecue at the Royal Oak Dairy building. The barbecue takes place July 19 and runs from 4 – 6 pm.
