Santa Claus paid special a visit to Hamilton city hall yesterday, but contrary to what you might expect, he was not there to spread holiday joy. Santa showed up to the general issues committee meeting, along with his elf, to lecture councillors on what he deemed to be a lack of response to the environmental crisis in the city.

Ian Graham was the person wearing the iconic red suit. The environmental activist used the opportunity to present several bottle of Cootes water to the committee. Graham suggested to councillors in attendance that the city needs to step up and take the climate emergency seriously.
Environmental activists made up the majority of people in attendance to the meeting that start around 9:30 am and wrapped up around 3 pm.

The city’s 28-page report on how to address climate change in the city was heavily criticized by attendees. Activists said the report suggests that it is only now, nine months after a climate emergency was declared, that councillors and other members of the city should start taking climate change seriously.
A general lack of concern and transparency was also pointed out by Graham that was put under even more pressure after the sewage leakage in Chedoke Creek.
Mayor Fred Eisenberger said that developing and implementing a plan is a giant undertaking and will take time for councillors and other city staff to get it right.
