City counsellors endorsed the testing of autonomous car technology on some Hamilton Mountain roads next year.

The program that was approved on Monday will see some Mountain roads on the south side used as testing areas for the integration of autonomous vehicles into the real world.
Autonomous cars will be seen amongst everyday traffic. However, there will be someone in the driver’s seat ready to takeover or someone controlling a certain part of the vehicle.
Hamilton was selected as one of six “regional technology demonstration sites” after the city’s public works committee voted in favour of the testing. Six streets will be chosen as public test beds by the Innovation Factory‘s Centre for Integrated Transportation and Technology.
City councillors said that the selected streets will not be used as runways for autonomous cars, but they will be the technology component for the cars to undergo the testing.
Having a public testing area will give space for certain start-ups and the innovation centre to perform necessary tests to the sensor and communication technology within an urban setting.
