Another Hamilton icon shuts down this week as Sherwood Centre closes its doors for good.
After being open for more than 50 years, the five-pin bowling alley officially closes to the public on July 18 at 4 pm.
The demise of the bowling alley came as a shock to many Hamiltonians, especially those who live in the Sherwood neighbourhood.
Despite bowling no longer being Hamilton’s favourite pastime, the bowling alley has continued to remain busy. Sherwood Centre has always been a popular destination for class trips, birthday parties and senior leisure. Weekday evenings at the alley are filled to the brim with all different bowling leagues.
Carriage Gate Homes, a Burlington-based building and development company, purchased the bowling alley about five years ago. There has been no clear indication of what will be become of the property.
Once Sherwood Centre closes, Mountain Lanes will be the only five-pin bowling alley left in Hamilton.
The closure of this bowling alley comes only months after Martin’s Bowling Alley on King St E shut their doors for good, as well.
