Significant winter storm expected for Hamilton on Saturday

The tame winter weather at the start of the new year will abruptly come to an end as a significant winter storm will hit Hamilton on Saturday.

As a low pressure system comes into southern Ontario at the start of the weekend, Hamilton can expect a mix of rain, freezing rain and snow.

Travel is expected to be impacted with significant rainfall amounts for areas north of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario.

Freezing rain is expected to affect most areas from Lake Huron to eastern Ontario. Ice accretion will also occur as a result of the low temperatures and significant rainfall. Snow will affect areas east of Georgian Bay.

The special weather statement states that it is still unclear which part of Hamilton will be impacted the most by the system.

The Ontario Storm Prediction Centre will be closely watching the system with updates and additional warnings released as the weekend approaches.

This could be the first major winter storm of 2020 for the Hamilton area. It’s the perfect opportunity to stay safe at home and get on those New Year’s resolutions of cleaning the house or reading a book.
