The Diplomat is bringing device-free dining to Hamilton

When’s the last time you got through a full night out with your friends and didn’t once look at your phone?

If you love spending time with your loved ones, but just can’t completely ignore the siren song of social media at the dinner table, then Hamilton’s own The Diplomat has an intriguing solution.

Their experiment, which will run every Sunday from November 3rd to 24th at the popular King William Street restaurant, is thanks to a partnership with Yondr; a company which provides concert venues and schools with special pouches that have a proprietary lock on them that can only be unlocked by venue staff.

A part of the Equal Parts Hospitality restaurant group, The Diplomat is the first restaurant in Canada to attempt the use of Yondr pouches as part of meal service.

“While it provides us with many benefits, technology is changing the way we dine. The enjoyment of great food is a global language. We celebrate, mourn, laugh, cry, and share – all around food. It has never been more important for us to create spaces where people can continue to share their experiences and connect with one another without distraction. Building relationships will continue to be the single most important skill of our lives, both personally and professionally,” says Equal Parts Hospitality co-founder Jerrett Young.

So how does it all work? In essence, your silenced phone will be sealed and locked in an opaque Yondr pouch, completely prohibiting your ability to compulsively use your phone while also allowing you the security of keeping it on your person.

Out of sight, out of mind, and out of contact, you can then enjoy The Diplomat’s exceptional food with your closest friends or family without ever having to worry about what’s new on Instagram or if that new Bumble match messaged you back yet.

I know what you’re thinking, and don’t worry: in case of emergencies, the pouches can be easily and quickly unlocked by The Diplomat’s staff.

This exciting experiment pioneered by The Diplomat and Yondr, if successful, could very well start a trend among restauranteurs all over as patrons feel the urge to return to a simple, device-free, distraction-less night out with their favourite people.
