Wet’suwet’en protesters have blocked rail lines between Hamilton and Aldershot

The next of many transit disruptions all across Canada, a group of protesters in solidarity with Wet’suwet’en Nation hereditary chiefs have blocked the rail lines between Aldershot and Hamilton.

The blockade, which began Monday evening with roughly 12 protesters, has effectively and indefinitely halted GO Transit train service between Aldershot GO and the Hamilton GO.

The ongoing protest is affecting train service at stations in Hamilton, Niagara Falls, St. Catharines, and West Harbour. Shuttle buses are being implemented in the interim.

These ‘Wet’suwet’en Strong’ protests and demonstrations nationwide are intended to raise awareness of, and establish solidarity with, the Wet’suwet’en hereditary chiefs’ opposition of the multimillion-dollar Coastal GasLink pipeline project being pushed forward in British Columbia; an intrusion on Indigenous territory.

Hamilton police have encouraged and warned protesters to peacefully leave the area, after they have been served an injunction by CN Rail. The protesters remain onsite until further notice.

Nearby, dozens of protesters from the Haudenosaunee Nations have also gathered to block vehicle traffic on Highway 6 in Caledonia.
