William Connell Park opens this Saturday

Hamilton’s newest green space, William Connell Park, is scheduled to officially open this Saturday. The park, located on West 5 Street between Stone Church and Rymal Road, was supposed to open next year.

Construction of the park began in May 2017. A large portion of the 2017 construction period was focused on safety features such as the implementation of a stormwater retention pond, water mains, sewers, the internal roadway and curbs.

A 130-spot parking area was built to accommodate visitors, as well as an asphalt walkway with multi-use trails.

The $2.5-million green space will feature many amenities. There will be a state-of-the-art play structure, splash pad, tennis court, soccer field and football field. While the soccer field has yet to be named, the football field will be named after Russ Jackson.

Due to the fields’ sod being recently laid, the sod will need to sit for a few months before the fields can be used.

Saturday’s opening will only feature the first phase of the park’s redevelopment. No construction dates have been announced, but phase two will include a field house with washrooms, change rooms and a concession area.

The official grand opening is scheduled for Saturday, August 18 at 11 am.
