Woman trampled by police horse at McMaster homecoming

Across Ontario, homecoming season is known to be a wild experience. Hundreds, sometimes even thousands, of University students flock to main streets around their schools to participate in what often transforms into an all-out street party.

McMaster University celebrated its homecoming this past weekend – while crowd control was needed, an unfortunate accident occurred due to an officer’s oversight.

Thousands of students gathered near McMaster University to kick off their homecoming celebration. The street was packed with students; some drinking, some not.

According to Hamilton police, a mounted unit was called to conduct crowd control along the busy street, as well as to clear the way for emergency vehicles.

In a video posted to Instagram, two mounted police officers are shown riding through the crowded street. One officer is riding down a completely cleared section of the road, while the other is riding through the crowd.

Students and other attendees in the crowd had to react quickly in order to move out of the police horse’s way. One student didn’t move quick enough, being knocked over and trampled by the horse. It’s alleged that the police officer didn’t see the student.

By-standers quickly rushed to the student’s aid to make sure she was okay. According to Jackie Penman, Hamilton police’s spokesperson, the woman wasn’t seriously injured and didn’t require hospital treatment.

Hamilton police say there’ll be no further investigation into the incident.

Is riding a horse through a packed street an appropriate method of crowd control? How do you feel about this incident? Let us know in the comments.
