Changes are coming to Hamilton’s green bins

Hamilton has been dealing with a wide variety of composting issues since late June. From the closure of the Hamilton Central Compost Facility to the city seeking alternatives to the green bin program, Hamilton has yet to find a real solution for the city’s composting needs.

Hamilton’s next step in attempting to solve some of these problems is to crack down on what can and can’t be placed inside green bins.

Starting April of next year, the city will no longer allow grass clippings, leaves or yard waste inside green bins.

The city suggests that residents put their outdoor waste in paper yard bags or open-top reusable containers. This will allow for easy disposal at Hamilton’s outdoor composting facility in Glanbrook.

This new protocol will be in effect until the Central Composting Facility is reopened. It’s estimated that the facility will be almost fully operational again within six to eight months.

The city will pay a third party to dispose of food waste and other remaining green bin materials. This service is estimated to cost $500,000; the money saved from not operating the Central Composting Facility will cover the cost.

As of right now, green bin material is still being sent to the Glanbrook landfill. The waste has unfortunately been sent to the site since June.

While cracking down on green bin usage seems like a good idea, it doesn’t fix the fact that green bin waste is still being put into landfills. Separating yard waste from food waste isn’t the issue; most residents already separate their goods appropriately into yard waste bags and food waste bags.

How can the city solve these composting problem for good? What do you think about the new regulations? Let us know in the comments.
