Zyla’s on James North has closed its doors

Another beloved James North mainstay has officially closed its doors.

Zyla’s Music & Menu, a joint restaurant and live music venue that established itself as a local favourite in its four years of life in the bustling James North community, is the next casualty in a disappointing surge of recent closures on the strip that includes Artword Artbar and b contemporary.

Owned by Nick Zyla and Cat Coppolino, Zyla’s held on to enjoy one last busy weekend at the 2019 Supercrawl before bidding farewell at a formal closing event on Sunday, September 15th.

The two bar operators owned the building and lived upstairs. Due to health concerns, they made the difficult decision to sell the property and use the proceeds to purchase a property in London, ON.

“We just want to thank the wonderful people in the community for the amazing 4 years they gave us in the space,” Coppolino told Urbanicity. “It was a wild ride and a hard decision to move on, but we’re looking forward to the next chapter.”

Zyla’s didn’t want to go out with a bang and instead only informed the core group of regulars the week of that the bar would be closing after Supercrawl.

This past weekend, Zyla’s sold most of their bar’s equipment, dishware, and memorabilia; the bar is nearly entirely empty now.

The disappointed outcry from loyal patrons on social media further proves just how much the humble, homey vibes of Zyla’s meant to the Hamilton community.

Gone but not forgotten, Zyla’s impact on the continued growth and development of James North is impossible to ignore.
