More than 800 tickets given out to drivers amid COVID-19 shutdown in Hamilton

Hamilton Police have laid 805 charges since cracking down on speeding and stunt driving in Hamilton during the coronavirus shutdown.

Project Recalibrate was launched on May 4th after an increased number of drivers were speeding and stunt driving around the city while there was less traffic due to the lockdown.

Over a two week period, there were 637 speeding charges, 24 stunt driving charges, one impaired driving charge, and 143 other traffic related charges.

Hamilton Police Service says the numbers are unacceptable and just because the streets are empty, doesn’t mean drivers can ignore the rules of the road.

Local drivers caught stunt driving could lose their car for seven days and face a seven-day driving suspension as well as an automatic court date.

Stunt driving in empty city streets during the shutdown became a viral sensation after videos began appearing on social media. A lot of major cities have experienced an uptick in stunt driving and tightened their road safety charges.
