An extra harsh winter is expected for Hamilton this year

The early winter weather Hamilton saw at the beginning of November was only a taste of the cold and snowy days that are expected over the next few months in the city.

This winter the city can expect a “classic Canadian season” according to a forecast predicted by The Weather Network. They predicted that millions of people around the country are in for a winter filled with snow and cold weather especially in Ontario.

According to The Weather Network, major cities across Ontario can expect a long, cold and snowy winter forecast.

“The cold weather will be most consistent during mid- and late-winter with extended periods of severe cold — including for major cities such as Toronto, Ottawa, London and Thunder Bay,” states the forecast.

“An active storm track will likely bring above-normal snow totals to much of the region, along with a risk for freezing rain at times, especially across southern Ontario and into southern Quebec. An abundance of lake-effect snow is likely until above-normal ice coverage on the Great Lakes becomes a limiting factor during February.”

It could be another messy Spring for Hamiltonians as well, with major flooding in Ontario expected for the second straight year. Residents have seen sections of the Waterfront Trail closed due to flooding for the last two out of three years. Also, homeowners along Beach Boulevard dealt with basement flooding last Spring.

“Current water levels on the lakes are well above normal (even near record levels for this time of year),” the forecast states. “If we do see a cold and snowy winter across this region, then flooding along the shorelines of the Great Lakes will be a serious issue later in the spring and into the summer.”
