Farmers’ Almanac calls for “biting cold” Ontario winter

Time to start unpacking those winter coats, folks.

Not to rush anyone from their summertime bliss, but the Farmers’ Almanac has already released its 2019 long-range weather predictions, and it doesn’t look any better than last year.

The publication was founded 200 years ago in 1818 and its forecast is based on mathematical and astronomical formulas which consider sunspot activity, tidal action, and the position of the planet, among other factors. This year the Farmers’ Almanac foresees that Canada is doomed for a very cold, “teeth-chattering” and long winter ahead.

They predict that winter will start early this year. In November, there will be at least one cold storm in Central Canada and in December we will see “two or three big storms that cover a good part of Canada”, according to Farmers’ Almanac editor Peter Geiger in a recent CTV news interview.

The good news is that British Columbia, the Prairies, and Atlantic Canada are set to receive their usual snowfall this year. The bad news is that Ontario and Quebec are due to see above-normal precipitation.

Temperature-wise, B.C. will enjoy its typical winter thermometer readings, Quebec and Atlantic Canada will be “cold”, Ontario will be “biting cold”, and the Prairies will be “teeth-chattering cold”.

Geiger stated that the coldest parts of the winter will be mid-February, particularly around February 12th-16th. At that time, we will see a decline in temperature and an increase of bitter winds.

In an interview with PR Newswire, Geiger clarified that, “contrary to some stories floating around on the internet, our time-tested, long-range formula is pointing towards a very long, cold, and snow-filled winter. […] We stand by our forecast and formula, which accurately predicted most of the winter storms last year as well as this summer’s steamy, hot conditions.”

Winter will finally wane out in early April, but not before March graces us with a stormy slew of snow, sleet, rain, and gusty winds.

That’s how the saying goes, right? In like a lion, out like a lion?
