The first game of Forge FC’s season as defending champions was soured by a late stoppage time penalty awarded to Cavalry FC last night.
After Forge scored what looked like the winner about 20 minutes earlier, Cavalry were awarded a penalty in the 94th minute that was slickly put away with the game ending as a 2-2 draw.

The incident that led to the penalty was a shot that came off Forge defender Dominic Samuel’s side then arm. Samuel was making an attempt to block the shot after being duped by the Cavalry attacker. The ball struck the defender’s outstretched arm and the referee awarded the penalty.
Forge captain Kyle Bekker gave the Hamilton team the lead with a diving header in the 71st minute.
The game started off as a messy and disjointed affair, which is a product of the start-stop training camps and postponed season.
Dominick Zator scored the opener to give Cavalry the early lead. Then, Forge’s Anthony Novak evened up the game at 1-1 a few minutes later.
The Hamilton team continues their stint at The Island Games on Sunday against FC Edmonton.
