Hamilton has broken records for its urban development projects

Though it should come as no real surprise given the massive amount of development happening in the city right now, 2019 saw Hamilton breaking records and setting new milestones for its urban development projects.

In the budget deliberations at Hamilton’s City Hall this past Friday, it was revealed that local construction projects exceeded $1 billion for the ninth time in the past ten years. On top of that, 2019 also saw the city’s construction projects collectively exceeding $1.5 billion for the very first time.

This news came courtesy of Jason Thorne, Hamilton’s head of city planning and economic development.

It’s also notable that these milestones are based not on single isolated projects, but on a large and varied spread of urban development in Hamilton including residential construction projects of over 2,700 new housing units.

Will 2020 be as fruitful as 2019? According to Thorne, 2020 may not surpass the level of development in 2019, but many exciting projects are set to take off this year.

These projects include the hotly-anticipated and ambitious West Harbour redevelopment, for which construction is set to begin on the Pier 8 Promenade; the planned construction of four new hotels in response to Hamilton’s growth as a tourist destination; and updates to the city’s parking master plan.
