Hamilton is about to get its first doses of the COVID-19 vaccine

As Hamilton still sits in the COVID-19 red zone and teeters on the edge of lockdown, the city has announced it will be receiving its first doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine in the coming weeks.

A release from the city on Friday afternoon reveals that Hamilton is expecting its first shipment of doses in the coming weeks, to be administered first to higher risk residents, likely including frontline healthcare workers and long-term care employees.

Hamilton Health Sciences, St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton, Primary Care Physicians and Hamilton Paramedic Services are currently working with local public health to create the city’s first clinic for COVID-19 vaccinations available to workers in long-term care facilities.

With a limited number of doses, this clinic will not be open to the general public and will be available to a select number of Hamiltonians by appointment. Those identified to receive the first doses of the vaccine will be contacted by the city.

“The news that was announced today by the Province that Hamilton would be receiving doses of the COVID-19 vaccine is very uplifting.  It has come at a pivotal time in our community when we are seeing a high number of outbreaks in our congregate care settings, an unfortunate number of deaths, and rising daily case counts,” said Michelle Baird, Director of Hamilton Public Health Services.

“We are looking forward to working with our hospital partners on getting this momentous project off the ground with hopes of having a positive impact on the health and wellness of our community.”

Further doses of the COVID-19 vaccine are expected to roll out in 2021 and made available to more and more Hamilton residents in the forthcoming months, based on priority.

In the meantime, Hamiltonians are urged by public health to continue being diligent about the established health & safety protocols, including avoiding gatherings with those outside your household, wearing a mask and physically distancing in public spaces, regularly washing your hands, and staying home if you feel unwell.
