Hamilton is creating 45 housing units with $10.8 million from federal government

As part of a nationwide $1 billion initiative to fund rapid housing across Canada, the City of Hamilton will be using its share of the federal dollars to construct 45 rapid housing units in the city.

The news comes following an announcement back in October that Hamilton would be receiving $10.8 million from the federal government with which to address housing solutions for the city’s low-income and vulnerable residents; one of Hamilton’s most consistently urgent issues.

These 45 units will be reserved for those experiencing homelessness and other vulnerable residents awaiting access to subsidized housing. Residents will be drawn from a waiting list to gain access upon their completion, which is expected to occur within the next year.

The plan is for the units to be created in various locales around the city, including a new low-rise building at 137 George Street by Options for Independent Living with space for 15 at-risk women, and a property at 180 Ottawa Street North with 12 bachelor units for at-risk Indigenous women, headed by Indwell Community Homes and Sacajawea Non-Profit Housing.

Further plans include a converted office space at 195 Ferguson Avenue North managed by Wesley Community Homes, which will feature 11 one-bedroom apartments for homeless residents; and a CityHousing Hamilton project turning a commercial space at 350 King Street East into another 15 one-bedroom units.

While a good step forward, these units are just a drop in the bucket for a much larger housing crisis in Hamilton. That said, locals hope this is one of many forthcoming actions taken to address this urgent issue in the city.
