Ontario hits record-breaking 2,432 new daily COVID-19 cases

Ontario just hit another distressing milestone, with the province reporting a record-breaking 2,432 new confirmed COVID-19 cases; the largest single-day jump since the pandemic began.

According to a tweet from Ontario health minister Christine Elliott, this new number includes 737 new cases in Toronto, 434 cases in Peel, 209 in York region, 190 in Windsor-Essex, and 142 in Hamilton. Today’s report also included 23 new COVID-19 related deaths.

The province’s overall total of active COVID-19 cases is currently at 17,484, which has shot up after a week of similarly concerning daily case reports including 2,139 new cases reported on Wednesday and the previous record holder of 2,275 new cases on Tuesday.

With numbers continuing to rise in spite of the province’s tiered COVID-19 restrictions plan, the Ontario Hospital Association is calling on the Ontario government to instate a lockdown of 28 days on all regions currently sitting in the red zone to help avoid overwhelming our hospitals.

It’s an especially tense time with the holiday season rapidly approaching and many worried that a number of Ontario residents will flout public health urgings to stay home and instead gather with others to celebrate, causing case numbers to continue spiking.

Public health continues to urge Ontarians to be diligent about health & safety guidelines, including only gathering with those in your immediate household (especially over the holidays), staying home whenever possible, wearing a mask in public spaces, maintaining proper social distancing from others, and regularly washing your hands.
