Hamilton is giving away free compost on October 5th

On Saturday October 5th, the City of Hamilton will be giving away free compost and woodchips from 7 – 11 am at 2200 Brampton Street and 308 Rymal Road East.

As the city collects yard waste throughout the year, they look to process it and turn it into compost so it can be reused. Compost is rich in nutrients and is very useful for gardening and lawn care. It adds nitrogen to a garden. Since plants require nitrogen to grow and reproduce, finding ways to ensure its availability in your soil is crucial to promoting a healthy, green, robust garden.

Fresh compost can be especially effective in when applied to garden beds during Autumn, as it will decompose over the winter and into the spring. This ensures that your plants are blooming in the richest, most nutrient-dense soil possible.

Any local gardening enthusiasts looking to take advantage of the giveaway will need to bring their own bucket, shovel, and muscle, but it’s a small price to pay considering fresh compost frequently costs upwards of $150 at Home Depot.

You can learn more about the giveaway here.
