Hamilton is seeing an increase in jobs and a decrease in office vacancies

Downtown Hamilton is seeing positive growth in its number of local jobs, and a positive decline in empty office spaces.

According to a report issued by Hamilton city council’s general issues committee, the city’s downtown saw 26,305 jobs in 2019, which includes 18,123 full-time positions; a promising climb for the health of the downtown core and its job market.

This constitutes a slight leap from 2018, which saw 26,119 downtown jobs, and also shows an increase of 2,380 more jobs in downtown Hamilton since 2011.

Alongside this, the report shows that 11.9 per cent of downtown office space, or 7 per cent if office towers are included, currently remains vacant; the lowest percentage in eight years.

The data comes from a city-initiated survey for which 2,233 local businesses were canvassed.

The findings show that 68.9 per cent of jobs in the downtown core are full-time positions, with 23.6 per cent being part-time and 7.5 per cent seasonal.

Sector by sector, public administration employs the most people downtown, followed by health care, technical services, food services, finance, and retail.
