Hamilton offers residents free composters

Since the closure of the Hamilton Central Composting Facility, the city has had to look into other ways to deal with compost. Instead of continuing to let the city’s organic waste be sent to the Glanbrook dump, Councillors Sam Murella and Matthew Green proposed to provide free backyard composters to lower city residents. After one week of planning, Hamilton is ready to provide select residents with free composters.

Officially starting this weekend, anyone with photo ID and proof of address can pick up a backyard composter. Residents living in wards 1 – 5 will receive the composter for free, while those living in wards 6 – 15 can buy a composter for $35 at any of the city’s municipal service centres.

Residents who qualify for a free composter can pick up their bins on the following dates:

On Saturday, July 28, bins can be picked up from Hamilton City Hall Garage. Pick up times are between 8 am and 12 pm.

On Saturday, August 11, bins can be picked up from Hamilton’s Central Composting Facility. Pick up times are between 8 am and 12 pm.

On Saturday, August 18, bins can be picked up at City of Hamilton’s Wentworth Operations Centre. Pick up times are between 8 am and 12 pm.

If you plan using a backyard composter, there are a few facts to keep in mind.

All composters must be kept in the backyard and be at least one metre away from your property line. Residents are responsible for their own composting; composters are not collected curbside like the green bin program. You can compost kitchen scraps, but do no compost meat, bones, grease, fat, cheese, salad dressings or oils.
