Hamilton plastic manufacturer building toboggans for holiday fundraiser

A Hamilton-based company that has made impact and abrasion resistant plastic for more than 40 years are making toboggans out of recycled material to help raise money this holiday season.

Toboggans are made out of recycled plastics from scraps at the manufacturer from products such as sprouts, chutes, funnel and component parts for conveyors, and other machinery.

Maljohn Plastics owner Malcolm Johnson told the Hamilton Spectator that they started making the winter toys decades ago as gifts to customers and suppliers.

This year the manufacturer will be selling high-end toboggans to the public with five-foot toboggans available for $99 and four-foot for $83.

All proceeds will be going to local and Canadian charities including Ronald McDonald House, Childhood Cancer, the Good Samaritan, and Hamilton’s Welcome Inn Community Centre.

The toboggans are also being made by a team of people in the city whose jobs have been impacted by COVID-19. Each person is paid $5 per toboggan, which can be assembled in 10 minutes. The goal is to make and sell between 500 and 1000 sleds.

Those interested in purchasing a toboggan can visit Maljohn Plastics at 183 Hendershot Road in Hannon.
