Hamilton’s 2nd case of COVID-19 confirmed

One day after Hamilton’s first case of COVID-19 was confirmed in a Burlington oncologist working at Hamilton’s Juravinski Hospital, the city’s second case has been confirmed.

Hamilton Public Health has confirmed that a 52-year-old man, who returned from a trip to New York City on March 5th, tested positive for coronavirus disease on March 10th at the Urgent Care Clinic on Main Street West and is now in self-isolation.

This new case is in no way connected to Hamilton’s first confirmed case, and the new patient followed all responsible protocol including self-monitoring, self-isolating, and obtaining proper medical testing. The man’s family is also self-isolating.

Though this new COVID-19 development in Hamilton may set off alarm bells, public health officials are still adamant that the risk of contracting the virus, in Hamilton and across Canada, currently remains low.

That said, Hamiltonians are encouraged to continue monitoring the situation day by day, and continue to practice proper preventative measures.

These include regular and thorough hand-washing, sanitizing shared surfaces, coughing or sneezing into the sleeve, holding off on unnecessary travel to at-risk regions, or staying home if you’re experiencing any symptoms of illness.
