Hamilton’s Black, racialized residents in hotspots now eligible for COVID-19 vaccine

In an effort to increase vaccine accessibility to residents disproportionately impacted by COVID-19, Hamilton Public Health has widened its vaccine rollout to include Black and racialized individuals ages 18 and up living in designated hotspots.

Black and other racialized populations who are 18 and up living in the postal codes L9C, L8W, L8L, L8N, and L9K can now book an appointment for their COVID-19 vaccine by calling the public health hotline at 905-974-9848, option 7.

“While COVID-19 vaccine supply is limited, it remains crucial that the limited supply is targeted to those most at-risk to make the biggest possible impact,” reads a release on the city website.

“From social and demographic data collected by Hamilton Public Health Services, nearly half of all COVID-19 cases in Hamilton (47%) self-identify as a member of a racialized community but racialized people make up less than a quarter (19%) of Hamilton’s total population.”

Hamilton health partners are also working closely with leaders in Hamilton’s Black and racialized communities in order to plan out the best possible means of providing vaccines to community members across the city.

The actions being taken include providing clinics in community-identified locations, launching a community ambassador program to build trust and confidence in COVID-19 vaccination, continuing collaboration with community groups and health centres, and expanding options for vaccine booking.

The city’s first targeted vaccine clinic – available to eligible residents by appointment only – will be at Restoration House at 54 Vine Street from April 26th to 30th between 10 am to 12 pm, then 1 pm to 3 pm daily.
