Hamilton’s Waterfront Trail reopens for public access this weekend

It may not be the best weekend weather-wise for a walk, but the news is still assuring: starting today, a stretch of the city’s Waterfront Trail is officially reopen for foot traffic this weekend after being closed temporarily amid COVID-19.

The reopened piece of the trail, lining Lake Ontario and running between Confederation Park and the Burlington Lift Bridge, is a popular stretch for locals looking to get some fresh air by going for a walk, run, or bike ride.

In the announcement made by Mayor Fred Eisenberger, the reopening is conditional on people still doing their part to practice social distancing by keeping a distance of at least 2 metres from others, avoiding gathering in large groups, only getting together with people who live in your household, and keeping animals leashed at all times.

The reopening announcement comes at the same time as the Hamilton Conservation Authority’s own announcement that they would initiate the first phase of reopening this weekend by allowing mindful public access on all of Hamilton’s rail trails.

According to Mayor Eisenberger, other public amenities in Hamilton such as conservation areas, playground structures and equipment, sports fields, picnic benches, all escarpment stairs, and Albion Falls continue to remain closed for the foreseeable future.

“I appreciate the community’s efforts to flatten the curve of COVID-19 and their patience as we continue to look at safely reopening additional amenities,” said Eisenberger.
