Hamilton’s Waterfront Trail to be repaired

One of Hamilton’s most popular trails will receive some serious repairs in the near future. The city has proposed to fix-up the Waterfront Trail around the western harbour in order to make it safer for residents.

Many sections of the Waterfront Trail need to be repaved or rebuilt entirely.

Over the last few years, poor weather has affected the trail greatly. Last summer, water levels in Lake Ontario were at a historic high, causing flooding in sections of the trail.

Since then, many violent storms have left their mark, taking out chunks of pavement, uprooting trees, and collapsing parts of the shoreline.

Currently these damaged sections are blocked off, but the present state of the trail is not keeping Hamiltonians away. Cyclists, walkers, and runners still frequent the trail, having to dodge protective fencing and share narrow spaces with the waterfront trolley.

Over the next few months, the Waterfront Trail will only become busier. While it is estimated that 1,000 people use the trail each day, that number skyrockets when the weather is warm.

The cost of the proposed repairs is estimated to be $440,000. Likely requiring 4 months of work, the city hopes to complete the repairs over the fall and early winter.

While these repairs make the Waterfront Trail much safer, it is important to note that these are only short-term solutions. With unpredictable weather and climate change, other forms of precautions must be implemented to stop the trail from being further damaged. It is unclear what these future precautions will look like, but they are bound to be costly.
