HSR workers to begin strike on Thursday, all bus service suspended

Beginning Thursday, local public transportation in Hamilton will be suspended indefinitely due to Hamilton Street Railway (HSR) employees commencing strike action this Thursday.

The Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 107 rejected the City’s final offer of a four-year Collective Agreement at a member meeting on Sunday, November 5th.

As a result, no regular HSR transit service or MyRide and on-demand service will be available to local public transit riders as of Thursday, November 9th at the start of the typical service day. The strike does not impact accessible transportation services through DARTS.

Locals are advised to make alternative arrangements for the near future including travelling by walking, carpooling, taxis, Uber rides, e-scooters, bikeshare, or working from home if possible.

“We know how important transit is to the residents and businesses of Hamilton and the City believes the best outcome is a mutually agreeable resolution with ATU Local 107 that helps avoid service disruption,” said Acting City Manager Carlyle Khan.

“With a strike date announced, the City will begin to implement its contingency plans and we are advising all transit customers to do the same.”

The City of Hamilton and ATU Local 107 have met 28 times since the start of 2023 with intent to reach a freely negotiated contract. ATU Local 107 held a strike vote on August 24th, with membership overwhelmingly supporting a strike mandate.

The City’s offer included a 3 per cent salary increase to HSR transit operators each year for four years, resulting in a salary of $79,726 by January 2026.

The City advises that updates will be made public via the city website as this develops.
