More air quality warnings hit Hamilton due to Ontario wildfires

Hamilton is once again under an air quality warning due to smoke caused by Ontario wildfires.

A special statement from Environment Canada issued on Wednesday morning explains that smoke plumes from forest fires in northeastern Ontario and Quebec have moved into the Hamilton area, resulting in deteriorating air quality.

While conditions are anticipated to improve by Thursday evening, Hamilton residents are advised to take precautions including keeping windows and doors shut, running a HEPA air purifier if available, and wearing a high-quality mask such as a NIOSH-certified N95 if they need to venture outdoors.

“People with lung disease (such as asthma) or heart disease, older adults, children, pregnant people, and people who work outdoors are at higher risk of experiencing health effects caused by wildfire smoke,” reads the notice from Environment Canada.

“Speak with your health care provider about developing a management plan for wildfire smoke events and maintaining a supply of necessary medications at home and always carrying these medications with you during wildfire season.”
