New online tool for hate incident reporting launches in Hamilton

A recently-launched online tool seeks to better understand hate incidents in Hamilton.

We Support Hamilton is a community-driven website that allows locals to report hate incidents in the city, in hopes of giving a clearer idea of the way hate incidents impact Hamilton.

The website is managed by the Hamilton Centre for Civic Inclusion (HCCI) in partnership with the Hamilton Anti-Racism Resource Centre (HARRC) and has no affiliation with Hamilton Police Services.

Locals who experience or witness a hate incident in Hamilton can share details through a submission form on the website with total privacy and confidentiality.

Those reports become an instrumental part of how relevant local organizations like the HCCI or HARRC can respond to the needs of those who experience hate incidents in Hamilton.

“WeSupport is about recognizing that the experience of hate can come with the experience of pain and suffering. These experiences should not be left in isolation,” reads a message on the We Support Hamilton website.

“WeSupport is a way to respond with care as the entry point. This platform offers a way to tell your story and be heard, to connect with existing resources and support, to not be alone when you navigate difficult systems of complaint, whether it be in areas of healthcare, employment, education, housing, community safety, public policy, juridical and others.”

The need for this sort of tool is as timely as ever: a 2022 report from the Hamilton Police showed a 61 per cent increase in hate incidents in Hamilton, with 174 hate or bias occurrence reports received by police.
