Popular series of interactive movie screenings returns to Hamilton

Imagine going to see a movie. Imagine the crowd is totally packed. Imagine all the people around you are vocalizing, yelling at the screen, and having some boisterous fun while the movie plays on.

Now, imagine a place where that last bit isn’t an annoyance. In fact, it’s an important part of the whole experience.

That’s what you’re going to get by attending That’s So Cinema: an ongoing interactive movie event at Hamilton’s own Zoetic Theatre that’s hosted by local event company Hub of the Hammer in association with Concession BIA

A big hit when it launched its first series of screenings in 2022, That’s So Cinema takes the most fun classic movies and turns them into lively interactive affairs with games, custom cocktails themed to each movie, prizes, and a ‘game guide’ with specially-designed callouts that encourage the audience to make some noise during the movie.

It’s an event very much in the tradition of cult classics like The Rocky Horror Picture Show and The Room – two films that regularly see screenings where dressing up in costumes, shouting during the movie, and throwing things in the aisles is part of the whole deal.

While the previous list of That’s So Cinema screenings featured fan favourites like The GooniesScreamThe Princess Bride, and Home Alone, the forthcoming lineup of films for Winter and Spring 2023 is completely different, but just as exciting.

First up with two back-to-back screenings on February 11th is a movie that beautifully lends itself to an interactive format: the beloved sci-fi adventure Back to the Future, a 1985 Robert Zemeckis film known for its blend of comedy, thrills, and heartfelt emotional beats.

Following that is a 4 pm matinee on March 11th of the classic Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, a family musical based on the beloved book by Roald Dahl; and a sure-to-be-rowdy screening of the raunchy comedy Step Brothers on the same day at 8:30 pm.

But that’s not all! On April 8th at 4 pm, a family-friendly matinee screening of the 1984 Wolfgang Petersen-helmed The NeverEnding Story adds interactive elements to a classic fantasy feature.

Finally, on May 13th comes an unlikely pair of back-to-back screenings, the first being the David Bowie-led fantasy film Labyrinth at 4 pm and the Samuel L. Jackson cult classic Snakes on a Plane closing things off in rowdy fashion at 8:30 pm.

With its first set of popular screenings late last year, That’s So Cinema proved to be a novel way to return to the communal, in-person moviegoing experience after numerous years where theatres had significantly reduced capacity or were even shuttered altogether.

It’s not hard to see this next batch of interactive films draw just as big of a crowd as the last ones, so grab your tickets now before those screenings sell out!
