Steel City Surplus is closing its doors in Hamilton

One of Hamilton’s longest-standing discount stores has closed its doors.

Steel City Surplus has been one of Hamilton’s best-known shops for discount and bargain shopping for the last 35 years at its location on Dundurn Street. After decades of healthy life in the Hammer, the store has set a closing date of January 18th.

The store’s owner, Ray Whittemore, posted the news of the store’s closure on the Steel City Surplus Facebook page, noting his own retirement as the primary reason for ceasing operations.

“As owner I’m also sad to see it closing but at 80 years old it’s time I retired,” explains Whittemore in response to a bittersweet bunch of farewells on Facebook.

The closure also comes with even deeper deals on Steel City Surplus’ bargain offerings. Between now and the January 18th closing date, regular-priced items in the store are at least an extra 40% off so Hamilton bargain hunters can help clear out the store a bit, as well as say a final goodbye to Whittemore and Steel City Surplus.

Steel City Surplus is located at 182 Dundurn Street South, and remains open until January 18th, 2020.
