This new coming-of-age movie set in Burlington is getting tons of buzz

Though plenty of film productions make use of the Hamilton-Burlington area, it’s rare we get a film with a story that is literally set in the Hamilton-Burlington area.

Such is the case with the new film I Like Movies, a debut feature by Canadian filmmaker Chandler Levack that has been seeing widespread acclaim from critics and audiences alike.

Levack grew up in Burlington, and it’s easy to feel that when watching her film: it doesn’t simply show us recognizable locales, it also makes us acutely feel what it’s like to live among them.

A coming-of-age comedy that’s both light-hearted and unflinchingly melancholy, I Like Movies is set in early 2000s suburban Burlington and follows high school senior Lawrence Kweller, a socially awkward cinema lover and aspiring filmmaker who wins a job at his local movie rental store and soon builds a complicated relationship with his older manager.

Levack’s award-winning film has been praised for its witty screenplay and its stellar central performances, including Isaiah Lehtinen as Lawrence and Romina D’Ugo as his manager Alana.

Residents of the area will surely catch a wide variety of local landmarks in I Like Movies, including familiar Burlington plazas and iconic spots like the Skyway Bridge and Easterbrook’s Hot Dog Stand.

Luckily, I Like Movies is currently being screened at Hamilton’s Playhouse Cinema, so locals can go check out a beautiful new film while it’s in town!
