Amidst ongoing global concerns about the spread and potential outbreak of coronavirus disease, national coffee chain Tim Hortons is temporarily halting the use of customers’ reusable cups.
The action comes shortly after Tim Hortons announced a revised and more sustainable model for its annual Roll Up the Rim to Win contest, which involves switching much of the contest to a digital app-based playing platform and encouraging the use of reusable mugs and coffee cups.
In a statement, Tim Hortons said it decided to adopt the “temporary approach” after listening to customer feedback.https://t.co/Jj7Sm7J6TN

As a result of the COVID-19 concerns, some of those plans have been put on hold; including the coffee chain’s intent to give away over 1.8 million reusable cups to customers, further encouraging the reduction of single-use waste.
The digital component of the new Roll Up the Rim model will still be in effect, and contest play will continue as planned. The only difference is that all beverages will be served in recyclable paper cups until further notice.
Tim Hortons says they still plan to give away the free reusable cups as well, but this is on hold until later in the year.
Other major coffee chains participating in a similar temporary action include Starbucks and Second Cup.
