Back to school heat warning

Book bags were packed, lunches were made and the school bus has come and gone. School is officially in session across Hamilton but that doesn’t mean the summer weather is letting up any time soon.

According to Environment Canada, Hamilton will be facing hot and humid weather through Wednesday. Maximum daytime temperatures are expected to reach nearly 31°C with humidex values near or above 40°C.

Tonight and tomorrow’s overnight temperatures will only come down to the low twenties, providing minimal relief from the heat.

The city is expecting a cold front to move through Wednesday night, bringing an end to such hot and humid weather.

Isolated showers and thunderstorms are possible over the next few days though, so be sure to provide your kids with an umbrella.

Such high and humid temperatures puts young children, pregnant women, older adults, people with chronic illnesses and people who work or exercise outdoors at risk of heat stroke or heat exhaustion.

Instead of heading to the park or playing outside after school, maybe play a board game, visit your nearest library or even grab some of Hamilton’s best ice cream.

We want to wish everyone a happy and healthy start to their school year. We want you to enjoy these last few weeks of warm weather, but always remember safety is key.

Did you send your kids back to school today? How do you keep cool when it’s so hot outside? Let us know in the comments.
