Beloved Hamilton sweet shop Candi Werx is facing roughly $10,000 in damages after a fire at the storefront early Monday morning.
The suspected cause of the blaze is a discarded cigarette or a similar smoking item placed inside of a wooden planter box that sat just outside of the shop’s Concession Street façade.
The wonderful people at @candi_werx had a fire happen at their location. Our hearts go out to them as this is one of the worst things that can happen to a small business during lockdown.
They’re def going to need love & help in order to get past this and back on their feet! pic.twitter.com/LE81iSWN7X

Hamilton Fire responded to the incident at around 1:30 am on Monday, May 17th and quickly extinguished the fire, which had spread into the building and caused smoke damage in the storefront’s interior.
“This was certainly not the excitement we wanted at 1:30 this morning but thankfully and most importantly, no one was hurt,” said the candy shop on social media about the incident.
Candi Werx is temporarily closed for repairs and cleaning, with hopes of reopening around the middle of June.
It’s already been a challenging year for the Concession candy store, with Candi Werx having moved from 544 Concession over to 605 Concession at the top of 2021 following a dispute with their former landlord, who wanted the shop to commit to a 47 per cent increase on their rent and a five-year lease renewal.
Stay updated on their reopening by following Candi Werx on social media.
