Hamilton city council has pushed the snow-clearing debate to the summer

Hamilton city council has once again postponed debate on the issue of clearing city sidewalks after major snowfalls.

A vote from councillors will push discussions of the issue to August of this year, which could mean that an actionable solution, if any, wouldn’t be instated in the city until 2022.

In the interim, city staff will be connecting with advisory committees from other cities to learn more about their programs and approaches, especially regarding senior and disabled citizens.

The issue of city-led snow removal on sidewalks has long-plagued locals and been cause for some serious safety and accessibility concerns for Hamilton residents and pedestrians, especially those of senior age or with physical disabilities.

Many city councillors see this continual postponement as an avoidance of the issue, while others dismiss its importance, suggesting that local property owners would end up doing a quicker job of clearing sidewalks in a timely manner than city-provided contractors.

As it is, Hamilton has fallen behind other neighbouring communities who already have city-supported snow removal on major and residential sidewalks, including Burlington and Oakville.

The city has estimated the cost of snow removal to be $3.36 million on major sidewalks after 5 centimetres of snow, or $5.36 million to include snow removal on all city sidewalks.
