Here’s what’s reopening in Hamilton this weekend

Ahead of the Victoria Day long weekend, the Ontario government has announced that select outdoor recreational amenities will be reopening after a period of closure amid COVID-19 stay-at-home orders.

Starting this Saturday, May 22nd at 12:01 am in Hamilton, gatherings of up to 5 people from different households will be permitted outdoors with physical distancing in place and masks worn at times when physical distancing is difficult to maintain.

In addition, numerous amenities such as golf courses, driving ranges, tennis courts, basketball courts, skate parks, marinas and boat launches, and other similar types of outdoor recreation will once again be open; again, with strict physical distancing in place.

Amenities that will remain closed until Phase One of the reopening plan begins in mid-June include outdoor pools, splash pads, restaurant patios, outdoor fitness classes, outdoor religious services, campgrounds, zoos, and botanical gardens.

Though the reopening of numerous recreational amenities is a bright spot for the holiday weekend, Hamilton residents are urged to be diligent about health & safety measures to help avoid further spikes in COVID-19 case numbers – even those who have been partially or fully vaccinated.

Indoor gatherings are still not permitted with anyone outside your own household, and masks are recommended outdoors when physical distancing is difficult to maintain, such as while playing basketball or in a crowded outdoor area.

Residents are also urged to avoid hopping between regions this weekend and are instead advised to find local activities to enjoy.

Further restrictions are expected to be lifted in the coming weeks and months, following a three-stage roadmap to reopening laid out on Thursday by the Ontario government.
