Much to say about stricter bylaw enforcement in the core

UPDATE: As of Monday, July 14th the task force made the decision to end any further action in increasing bylaw enforcement in the core.
Downtown pedestrians had much to say about the idea of stricter bylaw enforcement and the curbing of what has been referred to as “nuisance behaviour” in the downtown core. While some think it’s a reasonable idea, others fear it may be a “shell game” with an agenda to rid the area of an undesirable crowd.

It was just last week that a Hamilton task force said they were considering an initiative to come down a little stronger on bylaw enforcement and what has been referred to as ‘nuisance behaviour’. However, there has been some concern in the community that such a task force could possibly end up infringing on peoples’ rights, and marginalizing the poor.
The original presentation was made by Irene Huber, the property manager for the Right House on the corner of King and Hughson. Her concerns were that some of the loitering and activity in front of the building may be scaring off or unsettling potential investors in the building.
However, Ward 2 Councillor Jason Farr said his initial reaction when hearing the presentation was concern that alleged assaults around the building were taking place. That was something he quickly made note of. Farr was explicit in saying that this task force has no agenda to impose on anyone’s rights, and that the major concerns are focused on illegal behaviour and assault.
