The grand unveiling of the Juno House

We’ve been waiting for months, and the day has finally arrived. James Street is buzzing with eager Hamiltonians, elated to experience the energizing sights and sounds that Supercrawl has come to entail. And with events already kicking off downtown, there’s one more destination for music aficionados to flock to.

The grand unveiling of the Juno House featured the support of influential Canadian music powerhouses, Max Kerman (lead singer of the Arkells), blues artist Rita Chiarelli, and Tom Wilson (LeE HARVeY OsMOND, Blackie & the Rodeo Kings, Junkhouse). The Juno house is located at the newly transformed Tourism Visitors Centre on James Street North, in the heart of the Supercrawl action.

juno-house-grand-opening-2“This is pretty substantial. The Junos is a national broadcasted event on CTV. All eyes are going to be on Hamilton, and it’s going to be an opportunity for us to show everyone all of the arts, culture, and music” of the city, said Media Coordinator Debbie Spence. It’s an opportunity to showcase the role culture can play in the shaping of a city’s cultural and social spheres, she continued.

Arkells frontman, Max Kerman appeared ecstatic about the Junos making their mark in his hometown.

“The Juno Committee has been doing a lot of work on the ground, here in Hamilton… The Arkells are very happy that we could be a part of the festivities—We’re rock and roll, man! We turn it up! I think Hamiltonians really love when there’s a good party in the city, and there are things happening downtown. I know, for me, the most gratifying nights I have when I’m in Hamilton is when I see tons of people on the street. You get that at Art Crawl and Supercrawl. So, the Juno week should be a whole week full of that—and the more of that the better, as far as I’m concerned.”

The Junos will be “Turning It On” March 15th, 2015, at the First Ontario Centre, and are estimated to generate 10 million dollars for the city. It’s a big step in the city’s journey towards becoming a cultural hub—and if you ask me, the payoff doesn’t hurt.
